Originally ceremonial objects, the first bi discs date from the Liangzhu culture (3300-2000 BC). The symbolic meaning of the bi disc has evolved over time, although its original Neolithic function remains unknown to this day. In that period, the discs accompanied certain deceased people of high social status into their tombs. The earliest discs were undecorated, while those of later periods came to be engraved and carved, with motifs depicting deities and imagery associated with the sky.
