sandook-ancien-coffre-de-lhimachal-n-6
Sandook - Old Himachal chest No. 6

This carved solid wood tribal chest comes from the state of Himachal Pradesh, in north-west India. Home of the Dalai Lama, this region, dotted with Buddhist monasteries and temples, is strongly influenced by Tibetan culture.

The construction of this chest reflects the way of life of its former owners. As nomads, they needed to be able to carry their possessions on their travels. This chest is therefore not joined with nails, but with a system of tenons and pegs that allows it to be easily dismantled and reassembled. The bas-relief on this chest depicts scenes of daily life, here a man and a woman sharing a hookah, peacocks and other figures. Once opened, the lid can be held in place with a hook. Its metal chain fastening is original.

With its raw appearance, this chest is characteristic of the Himalayan region. Similar chests are found as far as Pakistan and even Afghanistan, most often with geometric carvings, notably rosettes. You will find many old chests similar to this one on the market, but with rosette motifs: beware, as in most cases the carvings were added recently.

---------------

Dimensions: H 80cm x W 107cm x D 46 cm

Material(s): Solid wood

Origin: India
---------------

Care: as its original patina has been preserved intact, we recommend using only a dry cloth to clean this old chest.
