Kantha - Old handmade bedspread No. 1
Handmade
Upcycled
One-of-a-kind pieceKantha is a traditional textile art: old saris and worn fabrics assembled by the women of West Bengal and Bangladesh. The fabrics are layered and joined with a simple embroidery stitch, the kantha stitch, which may or may not form dotted patterns. This technique produces a padded, reversible fabric that was traditionally used as a winter quilt. The tighter and more regular the stitching, the heavier the kantha, and the longer it takes to make. Modern kanthas usually have two layers of fabric, while old ones generally have more. The top layer may show signs of wear, revealing the fabric beneath and creating gradations of colour.
Originally, this technique was a way of turning old into new. The arrangement of the coloured fabrics, the choice of thread colour and patches, and the addition of sari borders are the fruit of the artisan's creativity, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece.
At home, use it as a bedspread or as a throw on your sofa or armchair to add a touch of colour to your interior.
Our kanthas are machine washable; however, given the age of the textiles, we recommend limiting the number of washes so as not to wear the fabric more than necessary.
