One-of-a-kind piece
Description

Authentic Martaban jar, a historic piece in dark brown glazed stoneware, recognisable by its dripping glaze effect, which leaves the natural clay visible on the lower part. Probably made in Burma in the 17th-18th centuries, it was used to transport and store precious goods across Southeast Asia.

The origin of these jars has long been debated among historians. Some argue that they were produced directly in Martaban, Burma, given the large number of examples found there. Others believe that the port mainly played a key role in the export of Chinese ceramics to Europe, without being a centre of production itself. However, recent discoveries have confirmed that local ceramic production existed in Martaban as early as the 7th century.

Shipwrecks from the 17th century have revealed that these jars were a key element in the trade of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). They kept goods such as salted pork, opium, ginger, wine and gunpowder, and many other products, in good condition during voyages between Coromandel and Batavia.

A testament to a rich commercial and craft heritage, this jar is a true piece of history.

Careful, reused packaging

Your parcel is prepared in our warehouse in France. As most of our pieces are one of a kind, the packaging has to be made to measure, which takes a little longer than for standard products. The item is protected and packed in a cardboard box for the safest possible shipping.

The little extra? We reuse packaging as much as possible to reduce our impact on the planet.
