Nakab - Solid wood Himalayan mask No. 4
Handmade
Vintage
One-of-a-kind piece
Wooden mask from the Himalayas.
These masks from the Himalayas (probably from north-eastern Nepal) are among the symbols that best represent the culture and traditions of the people of the Himalayan region. The tradition of wearing these masks is very old, and has its roots in the animist tribes of the region, who worshipped the spirits of nature and the guardians of their mountains. The shamans of these tribes wore these masks during the rites they performed to protect their villages, heal illnesses, carry out exorcisms, and so on.
These masks were given very important social roles in the life of these communities, as they could also be used during theatrical performances and ceremonies dedicated to their ancestors. The Hindu and Buddhist cultures, which became predominant in the surrounding regions, gradually replaced the myths of these shamanic cults. But some spirits and demons of these tribes were adopted by the Buddhist tradition, and a few of them even became wrathful yet protective deities in Buddhist doctrine.
