Kalasa - Small wooden altar No. 2
Handmade
Vintage
One-of-a-kind pieceWooden household altar, carved with two horses' heads. Every Hindu home in India has its altar, its puja mandir, a household shrine that holds small idols or other divine symbols used for daily prayer and for the celebration of the great Hindu festivals.
The objects usually found in these shrines each carry a spiritual meaning. The diya (oil lamp) symbolises light and wisdom, dispelling the darkness of ignorance. The kalash, a pot filled with water and topped with a coconut and mango leaves, represents the five fundamental elements of life and evokes fertility, abundance and vitality. The shankh, or conch, embodies the sacred sound “Om” and is blown to mark the start of prayers. The sound of the bell, for its part, invites worshippers to refocus on their devotion while purifying the air of negative energies. Other elements, such as incense, flowers, garlands, water and prashad (a sacred sweet offering), also play an essential role in Hindu rituals.
