Kantha - Handmade Antique Bedspread No.9

Kantha is a traditional textile art, the assembly of old saris and worn fabrics made by women in the region of West Bengal and Bangladesh. The fabrics are superimposed and assembled using a simple embroidery stitch, the kantha stitch, forming or not dotted patterns. This technique produces a fleecy, reversible fabric, which was traditionally used as a winter quilt. The tighter and more regular the stitch, the heavier the kantha will be, and also the longer it will take to make. Modern kanthas usually have two layers of fabric, while older ones usually have more. The top layer may show signs of wear, revealing the fabric underneath, resulting in color gradations.

Basically, this technique allowed to reuse the old to make new. The assembly of colored fabrics, the choice of the color of the thread and the patches, the addition of sari borders is the fruit of the creativity of the craftswoman, which gives a unique piece!

At home, use it as a bedspread or as a blanket on your sofa or armchair to add a colorful touch to your interior.

Our kanthas are machine washable, however due to the age of the textiles we recommend limiting the number of washes so as not to wear out the fabric more than necessary.
