Authentic Martaban jar, a historic piece in dark brown enameled sandstone, recognizable by its small handles below the pass. Probably made in Burma to XVIIth-18th centuries, it was used for the transport and storage of precious foodstuffs across Southeast Asia.
The origin of these jars has long been debated among historians. Some argue that they were produced directly to Martaban, in Burma, due to the large number of copies found on site. Others think that this port played above all a key role in theExport of Chinese ceramics To Europe, without being a production center. However, recent discoveries have confirmed that a local production of ceramics in Martaban existed from the 7th century.
Ship wrecks from XVIIth century revealed that these jars were a key element of the trade in the Dutch company of East India (VOC). They made it possible to effectively keep goods such as salty pork, opium, ginger, wine, gunpowder, and many other products, during expeditions between Coromandel and Batavia.
Testimony of a rich commercial and artisanal past, this jar is a real History piece.

In the event of negative temperatures outdoors, please take the precautions for use, the ideal remaining to move the jar in the shelter, or at least lay the jar on wooden boards in order to let air circulate and avoid direct contact with the frozen floor.
Our old jars are not established with water. On request, we can apply a seal, which will allow additional protection outdoors, and/or to be able to use jar as a plant pot. Please note, the seal will not be effective when using prolonged use in contact with water (use as a vase for cut flowers for example).

Most of the bulky command deliveries are made on default palette. The palette will be deposited by the carrier at the foot of your building/home. We can also offer you a delivery to two deliverers (for eligible items), up to the third floor without elevator, in the room of your choice, at an additional cost.
