Anji - Chinese wall basket No. 4
Handmade
Vintage
One-of-a-kind pieceThis large old tray made of woven plant fibres was used in various regions of southern China for sorting, withering and airing tea leaves after picking. Archive photographs, some of them taken in Canton (Guangzhou), show these trays being used in the first stages of tea preparation, with the leaves spread out to lose part of their moisture before processing.
Entirely handmade, this tray features a fine, tight weave, offering a stable surface while allowing good air circulation. Its reinforced rim provides rigidity and makes it easy to handle during the various stages of tea processing.
This type of tray was widespread in the farming and trading regions linked to tea production. Today it shows a natural patina resulting from use and the ageing of the fibres.
Now removed from its original purpose, it can be used as a decorative object, on its own or combined with other old trays hung on the wall, creating a graphic and textured composition.
