Female statuette carved from wood from Maharashtra, having served as an offering. We generally find women praying, but also women carrying water, pregnant women or mothers. Rather primitive in design, these small dolls may have been used inside homes, as offerings to the goddess Maulli, a popular deity who protects against diseases such as smallpox and cholera. She also embodies the goddess of fertility. Often, these statuettes are missing noses, arms or ears, and have been polished over time.
